Cox leads Axemen to sweep of Sea-Hawks
WOLFVILLE — Acadia defeated Memorial 81-68 on Saturday at Stu Aberdeen Court in Atlantic University Sport men's basketball action.
Gabe Davignon paced the Axemen with 20 points, including five three-pointers. Glen Cox posted a double-double with 23 points and 12 rebounds, while Kyle Munro contributed 13 points, eight assists, and three steals. Ryan Regault added 12 points, six assists, and two steals.
Acadia built an 18-12 lead in the first quarter. Munro opened the scoring with a jumper, followed by a Davignon three-pointer. Memorial's Zack Weenk answered with a pair of threes, and Flynn Boardman-Raffet chipped in with a layup, but Acadia's Glen Cox closed the quarter with a layup and a free throw to give the home side a six-point edge.
The Axemen outscored the Seahawks 22-16 in the second quarter, pulling away with contributions from Davignon, who nailed two three-pointers, and Briawne Wilson, who scored in the paint. Acadia stretched its lead to 18 points late in the half and went into the break up 40-28.
Memorial rallied in the third quarter, with Jodick Moudiandambu scoring several layups and Boardman-Raffet hitting a three-pointer. However, Acadia's Cox and Munro combined to maintain the lead, finishing the quarter ahead 62-49.
The Seahawks pushed back in the final quarter, led by Josh Reimer and Weenk, but Regault and Cox countered with timely three-pointers. Davignon and Erik Hayden sealed the win with free throws in the closing minutes. The teams tied 19-19 in the final frame, but Acadia's earlier dominance secured the victory.
Weenk led Memorial with 14 points, including four three-pointers, while Boardman-Raffet added a team-high 15 points and nine rebounds. Reimer contributed 10 points and two blocks, and Norm Burry chipped in with 14 points and six rebounds.
Next weekend Acadia hits the road to face Cape Breton and STFX.
