WOLFVILLE, N.S. – The Acadia Axemen edged Memorial University 2-1 in Saturday's tightly contested AUS soccer match at Raymond Field.
Sam Young (Halifax, NS) opened the scoring for Acadia, followed by a goal from Noah Schurman (Coldbrook, NS) to give the home side a 2-0 lead in the first half. Memorial's Jacob Grant (St. John's, NL), assisted by Brent Hennebury (Lawn, NL), responded with a goal to bring the Sea-Hawks within one.
Despite aggressive play from both sides in the second half, neither team could add to the scoreline. Acadia's defense held strong, and goalkeeper Connor Burns (Halifax, NS) made key saves to preserve the victory - his first in the AUS.
The match featured its share of disciplinary actions, with Acadia's Xavier Hill (Dartmouth, NS) receiving a yellow card in the first half and Memorial's Luke Peddle (Torbar, NL) shown a red card in the second half.
Memorial outshot Acadia 21-18, but Burns' performance in goal proved crucial.
Young was named Acadia's player of the game, while Louis-Charles Valliancourt (Sherbrooke, QC) earned the honour for Memorial.
The win improves Acadia's record to 1-2-2, while Memorial falls to 2-2-1.
Acadia travels to Saint Mary's on Thursday night to face the Huskies in their next match, while Memorial faces Dalhousie on Sunday morning at 11:15 a.m. to wrap up their weekend.
