AUS Swimming Championship: Axemen 2nd, Axewomen 4th in Day 1 results
 

Halifax, N.S. - The Acadia Axemen are currently in second place in the overall team scores while the Axewomen sit in fourth after the first night of competition at the 2022 Subway AUS Championships hosted by Dalhousie University. With 230 points, the Axemen trail the Dalhousie Tigers, who are leading the men's team scores with 316 points. Memorial sits in third with 163 points. The Axewomen earned 142 points on night one of the competition behind Dalhousie with 332 points, Memorial University with 192 points, and UNB with 161 points. 

Starting off the first night of finals competition was the women's 200 metre freestyle event. Acadia's Annie Ingo of Sydenham, ON was 16th in 2:17.17 behind overall winner Reagan Crowell of Dalhousie in 2:01.43. 

On the men's side, Noah Mascoll-Gomes took the win in 1:50.24. Acadia's Dean Sangster of Truro, N.S. and Bo Stokesbury-Price of West Brooklyn, N.S. took second and third respectively in 1:52.29 and 1:52.52. Acadia's Marcus Vaillancourt of Quispamsis, N.B. was fifth in 1:55.25, Cameron Ingo of Sydenham, ON was seventh in 1:58.53, and Josh Elsworth of Aspen, N.S. was 16th in 2:02.05. 

In the women's 50 metre backstroke, Acadia's Jessica Pelletier of Fredericton, N.B. was the winner in 29.37, ahead of Acadia's Grace Earle of Halifax, N.S., who was fourth in 30.34. Cali Bruce of Halifax, N.S. and Ally Bennett of Georgetown, ON, both of Acadia, were 9th and 15th in 31.15 and 32.99 respectively. 

Christian Payne of Dalhousie was the overall winner in the men's 50 metre backstroke in 25.28, while Acadia's Aaron Day of New Glasgow, N.S. was third in 26.16. Daeton Pitre of Bathurst, N.B. and Owen Landry of Dartmouth, N.S. were fifth and 11th in 27.19 and 28.77 respectively. 

Abbey Corish of Dalhousie won the women's 100 metre breaststroke in 1:12.95. Acadia's Elizabeth Morrison of Fredericton, N.B. was 3rd in 1:14.51, Kali Lancaster of Victoria, B.C. was fourth in 1:14.54, and Sarah MacDougall of Bedford, N.S. was eighth in 1:17.75. 

Adam Bouma won the men's event in 1:03.50, just ahead of Acadia's Gordon Shortt of Simcoe, ON in second place in 1:03.92. Acadia's Aubrey Landry of Lawrencetown, N.S. was sixth in 1:06.37. 

Memorial's Heidi Perry was the women's winner in the 100 metre butterfly in 1:04.71, just ahead of Acadia's Aideen Nelson of Corner Brook, NL, who was third in 1:05.13. Lia Lancaster of Victoria, B.C. and Holly McCool of Severn, ON were 13th and 14th in 1:12.73 and 1:14.85 respectively. 

In the men's race, Acadia's Shane Kenny of Bathurst, N.B. took the win in 54.70 ahead of Marcus Vaillancourt, who was fourth in 56.95. Acadia's Elyott Chang of Calgary, AB was fifth in 56.98, while Lucas Perkins of Ottawa, ON was 13th in 1:01.87. 

Owen Landry was eighth in the men's 400 metre Individual Medley in 5:05.78 behind winner Matty Whelan of Memorial, who won in 4:33.80. 

The Dalhousie Tigers were the winners in the women's 400 metre freestyle relay in 3:51.17. The Acadia Axewomen's team of Elizabeth Morrison, Kassidy Hamilton, Lia Lancaster, and Grace Earle were fourth in 3:57.23.

The men's win went to the Axemen's team of Bo Stokesbury-Price, Dean Sangster, Gordon Shortt, and Shane Kenny in 3:23.81, ahead of the second-place Tigers in 3:27.38.

The AUS Championships will continue through March 12th and 13th, with prelims beginning at 10am and finals beginning at 6pm.
