Axemen hang on to 2nd, while Axewomen move up to 3rd at AUS Championship

Halifax, N.S. - After two days of competition at the 2022 AUS Swimming Championships the Acadia Axemen are sitting in second place with 517 points behind the Dalhousie Tigers with 692 points. The Axewomen are in third place with 330 points behind the leading Tigers with 735 points and Memorial University with 389 points. 

Starting off night two of finals was the women's 100-metre backstroke. Acadia's Jessica Pelletier of Fredericton, NB captured the silver in her second medal of the meet in a time of 1:04.26, while teammate Grace Earle of Halifax, NS just missed the bronze, touching the wall fourth in 1:04.58.

In the men's race, Acadia's Dean Sangster of Truro, NS took the bronze in 55.85, while Acadia's Aaron Day of New Glasgow, NS earned fourth place in 57.62, and Joshua Elsworth of Aspen, NS was 12th in 1:06.06

In the women's 50 metre butterfly, the Axewomen took three out of four spots on the podium, with Kassidy Hamilton of Fredericton, NB taking the silver in 28.82 and Aideen Nelson of Corner Brook, NL the bronze in 29.07. Acadia's Cali Bruce of Halifax, NS was eighth in 29.83 and Lia Lancaster of Victoria, BC was 15th in 30.98.

In the men's 50 metre butterfly, Shane Kenny of Bathurst, NB won his second individual gold of the meet in a time of 24.21. Teammate Marcus Vaillancourt of Quispamsis, NB was seventh in 25.98, and  Daeton Pitre of Bathurst, NB was tenth in 26.51.

In the women's 400 metre freestyle, Acadia's Elizabeth Morrison of Fredericton, NB was seventh in 4:45.11, while teammates Annie Ingo of Sydenham, ON and Gina Vaillancourt of Quispamsis, NB were ninth and 14th in 4:41.46 and 4:59.35 respectively. 

In the men's event, Acadia's Bo Stokesbury-Price of West Brooklyn, NS just missed a bronze medal in 4:05.00, while Cameron Ingo of Sydenham, ON was sixth in 4:14.94, Lucas Perkins of Ottawa, ON was 13th in 4:26.74, Joshua Elsworth was 14th in 4:29.36, and Sean Vibert of Wolfville, NS was 16th in 4:39.77.

Acadia's Kali Lancaster of Victoria, BC won the bronze medal in the women's 200-metre breaststroke in 2:44.15, just out-touching teammate Sarah MacDougall of Bedford, NS, who was fifth in 2:44.57.

Gordon Shortt of Simcoe, ON earned silver in the men's race in 2:22.89, while teammates Elyott Chang of Calgary, AB and Aubrey Landry of Lawrencetown, NS were fourth and seventh in 2:23.90 and 2:31.60 respectively. 

Elizabeth Morrison was Acadia's top placement with seventh in the women's 50-metre freestyle in a time 27.54. Kassidy Hamilton and Jessica Pelletier pulled off a 12th-place tie in 27.94, while Lia Lancaster was 14th in 28.08. 

On the men's side, Dean Sangster earned the gold medal and his fourth podium of the meet in 22.62. Bo Stokesbury-Price was fourth in 23.79, Daeton Pitre was fifth in 23.97, Aaron Day was seventh in 24.20, and Aubrey Landry was 12th in 25.12.

Shane Kenny captured his third individual butterfly medal in the men's 200-metre butterfly with a silver in a time of 2:11.00. Teammate Marcus Vaillancourt was fourth in 2:12.95. 

In the final event of the evening, the 800-metre freestyle relay, the Acadia Axewomen's team of Kassidy Hamilton, Grace Earle, Elizabeth Morrison, and Kali Lancaster won the bronze medal in 8:47.38

The Axemen's team of Bo Stokesbury-Price, Dean Sangster, Gordon Shortt, and Marcus Vaillancourt also earned the bronze in 7:43.64, the Axemen's second relay medal of the competition.

The AUS Championships will continue through the third and final day on Sunday, March 13th. Finals will be live-streamed beginning at 6 pm.
