Axewomen win first of two meetings against Capers this weekend

WOLFVILLE, NS – Subway Player of the Game Sandy Saunders (Woodstock, N.B.) led the Axewomen to an 87 – 66 win over the Cape Breton Capers at Stu Aberdeen Court. Saunders tallied 14 points and 12 rebounds in the match.

"Well, all week we had to prepare very well. They have one of the best girls in the country, that being Letlow, so we were focused in on how we were going to guard her and everyone else on their team. We had a big week of practice," said Saunders after the win.

"We couldn't do it without her (Sarah Delorey). She is guarding Letlow and she has a huge job. She is trying to stay on Letlow, so she can't get the rebound and we had to help out and rebound for Sarah when she is holding off Letlow," added Saunders when asked about her teammate Sarah Delorey (Elmsdale, N.S.)who had the challenge of guarding the Caper's top player.

Cape Breton's Player of the Game, MacKenzee Ryan (Glace Bay, N.S.), led the Capers scoring with 18 points as well as grabbing 4 rebounds.

Haley McDonald (Port Williams, N.S.) scored 13 of her team-high 20 points in the opening quarter as the Axewomen took a 30 – 14 lead into the second quarter. The Capers would answer, outscoring Acadia by 24 – 19 to narrow the lead as the game headed to halftime.

Elisabeth Iseyemi posted 15 points and 8 rebounds for the Axewomen.

The Capers looked often to Kiyara Letlow (Toronto, Ont.) on the offensive end. Letlow added 23 points and 16 rebounds with a commanding presence under the rim.

The Capers' strategy of attacking the rim led to some foul trouble for Acadia. The Capers' ability to draw fouls led to them outscoring the Axewomen 25 – 4 from the line.

Acadia was ultimately able to persevere, outscoring the Capers 26 – 13 in the third quarter to give the Axewomen a comfortable lead for the rest of the game.

Acadia is now 5 – 0 following tonight's win, while the Capers fall to 2 – 3. The Axewomen will host the Capers again tomorrow for a 2:00 pm matinee.
