Axewomen complete comeback to stay undefeated
WOLFVILLE – The Acadia women's rugby team came back from down 12-0 to defeat STFX 20-12 on Saturday afternoon in Wolfville.
With both teams nationally ranked heading into the match, STFX at No. 7 and Acadia No. 8 in the country, plus both undefeated in AUS conference play, there was a playoff type atmosphere.
Shona Galloway (Upper Tantallon, NS) opened the scoring the game for the X-Women in the 43rd minute, with Katie Murphy (Milvale, PE) kicking the convert. Janet Kennedy added to the STFX lead with her try just six minutes later.
Acadia got on the board in the 52nd minute with Mychael Paris (Halifax, NS) scoring her second try of the season.
Sarah Gunn (Scotsburn, NS) cut further into the STFX lead with a penalty goal with just under 20 minutes remaining.
To complete the comeback, it was Sara Grant (Melrose, NB) scoring in the 68th minute, with a Gunn convert, to cap off the game.
Acadia will now head to Halifax next weekend to face Saint Mary's, while STFX will head to Charlottetown to play UPEI.
