Grant, Reid, and Paris shine in AUS women’s rugby awards
WOLFVILLE, N.S. – Atlantic University Sport has announced its 2024 women’s rugby major award winners and all-stars, with Acadia Axewomen standouts Sara Grant, Samantha Reid, and Mychael Paris earning recognition for their impressive seasons.
Grant tops the scoring charts
Sara Grant, a fourth-year centre from Melrose, N.B., has been named to the AUS all-star team after finishing as the conference's top scorer. Grant recorded seven tries and 12 conversions, amassing 59 points for the season. Her scoring prowess played a pivotal role in leading Acadia to a berth in the AUS rugby championship final.
Grant's ability to control the game with her speed and skill makes her a key player for the Axewomen as they head into the final against STFX.
Reid makes an impact in rookie season
Samantha Reid, a first-year flanker from River John, N.S., was also named to the AUS all-star team following a strong debut season. Reid’s defensive abilities and versatility saw her score three tries and one conversion, contributing 17 points.
As a rookie, Reid quickly established herself as a reliable player, earning a reputation as a cornerstone of Acadia’s forward pack.
Paris provides stability in the backline
Third-year centre Mychael Paris from Halifax, N.S., rounds out the Acadia representation on the AUS all-star team. Paris played a crucial role in both offense and defence for the Axewomen, contributing two tries and providing stability in the midfield. Her leadership and vision on the field were key factors in Acadia's strong season.
Paris’s consistency has made her a vital piece of the Acadia backline, and her presence will be critical in the upcoming championship match.
Acadia prepares for final showdown
The Axewomen will face the STFX X-Women in the 2024 AUS rugby championship final on Oct. 23. With the experience of Grant, the promising talent of Reid, and the leadership of Paris, Acadia is poised for a strong challenge as they aim to capture the Birks Memorial Trophy.
The winner will advance to the U SPORTS women’s rugby championship, hosted by UPEI from Oct. 30 to Nov. 3 in Charlottetown.
