Axewomen lose first game of 2013 season to Capers

WOLFVILLE, N.S. - The Acadia Axewomen took the field to face the #9 CIS ranked Cape Breton Capers in their second game of the opening weekend of the AUS soccer season.

The Axewomen came out strong, dominating the play in the first half and applying good pressure to the Caper's back line. Landing five of their game total of 11 shots, Acadia was held scoreless.

At the 37 minute mark of the first half the Capers knocked a long ball in behind the Axewomen defence that found Caper Striker Tamara Brown's foot and the back of the net. The Axewomen headed into the locker at the end of the first half down by one.

During the second half both teams had chances until late in the game. With 10 minutes remaining the Axewomen put the Capers on their heels but couldn't put the ball in the back of the net. Kinsella Noseworthy Smith had the best chance but keeper Tiffany O'Donnell held off the attack and posted her first shutout of the 2013 season following a 4-4 tie against Dalhousie the day before in Halifax.

The game ended with a 1-0 win for the visiting Capers, but there were lots of positives to take away from the games this weekend and lots to build on for the rest of the season. Head Coach Amit Batra was positive on a game that was well played by his team. "It was a back and forth game between two very good teams. They had good counter attack off a free-kick and a good finish but we felt all along we could get back into the game. We put a lot of pressure on towards the end and credit to their team, they defended really well.  It's a game that I think could have gone either way and I think both teams are looking forward to playing each other again next weekend."

The Axewomen tallied a total of 11 shots, 7 of which were on goal compared to CBU's 5. Subway player of the Game for Acadia was first year defender, Emily Nickerson, while Tamara Brown, who scored the lone goal took honours as the Player of the Game for Cape Breton.

Cape Breton improves to 1-0-1, while the Axewomen drop to 1-1-0, posting a win from Friday against Mt. Allison. The Axewomen are on the road next Saturday and Sunday September 14th and 15th as they head to St.Fx and conclude the trip with a rematch against Cape Breton in Syndey, N.S.
