U SPORTS No. 9 ranked Axewomen hand Moncton 7-1 loss

WOLFVILLE, N.S. – Acadia's second goal by Grace Somers (Bedford, N.S.) in the 24th minute was the eventual game-winner as the U SPORTS No. 9 ranked Axewomen defeated the visiting Moncton Aigles Bleues 7-1.

The last time the teams met on September 17 in Moncton, the Axewomen topped the Aigles Bleues 2-0.

This time Acadia dominated from the moment the game started. Jayden Boudreau (Halifax, N.S.) scored her first two goals seven minutes into the opening half.

Grace Somers replied in the 24th minute with a great unassisted effort.

Madyson Harris (Wolfville, N.S.) tipped in a loose ball after Mya Harnish's (Halifax, N.S.) shot from outside the 18-yard box deflected off the keeper's hands and the crossbar, landing near the goal line beside a sprawled Moncton keeper.

Abigail Aucoin (Dartmouth, N.S.) scored her fifth goal of the season off of a beautiful cross by teammate Meghan Johnston (Dartmouth, N.S.)to put Acadia up 4-0 in the 38th minute.

With a 4-0 lead after 45 minutes, the Aigles Bleues finally responded with an unassisted goal by Alexandra Roy (Shediac Bridge, N.B.). Roy stole the ball from an Acadia defender deep in the Axewomen end and took a shallow shot from the left side of the 18-yard box and sent it well over Isabella Barbieri's (Toronto, Ont.) outstretched arms.

Boudreau's second goal came from an initial stop by Moncton keeper Chelsea Burnham (St-Jean, N.B.) on a distant shot by Jessica Hunt (Langley, B.C.) that landed beside Boudreau. Boudreau took two kicks before netting the ball.

Up 5-1 in the 80th minute, Jenna Turner (New Ross, N.S.) took a Georgia Hamnett (Coquitlam, B.C.) pass to the net and scored her first goal of the season.

The last goal was an own goal that gave Acadia the eventual 7-1 win.

Mya Harnish was named the Subway Player of the Game for her defensive effort and assist on the Madyson Harris goal.

"I just think that we've had a lot of games since then and have gone through a lot of growth. Tonight We came out with a lot of energy and every single person on the team brought their all. As a whole, we did really well," noted Harnish after being asked what the difference was in a big 7-1 win compared to the 2-0 win in September.

Ramirez and Barbieri were tested on two shots on goal, while her counterpart – Burnham – had to make 12 saves on 19 shots on goal. Acadia had 36 shots.

The Axewomen improve to 7-2-1 and take on UNB tomorrow at 5:00 pm in their last home game of the season. Moncton, still looking for their first win, host Mount Allison on Saturday at 5:00 pm.
