Sea-Hawks sweep Axewomen in St. John's
ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — The Acadia Axewomen fell to the Memorial Seahawks in straight sets, 28-26, 25-15, 25-22, in AUS women's volleyball action Saturday at the Field House.
Memorial took an early lead in the first set with a service ace from Ashlynn Harris, but Acadia responded with a kill from Katie MacLean at 7-3 to cut the deficit. The Axewomen battled back to tie the game at 22-22, highlighted by a crucial block from Alexia Lemay-Evans and Wesley-Ann Bailey. Lemay-Evans added a late kill to keep the score level at 26-26, but the Seahawks closed out the set 28-26.
Acadia opened the second set with a service ace from Allison Van Zeumeren and stayed competitive early, tying the score at 3-3 and 5-5 behind kills from Jenna Lake and Lemay-Evans. However, Memorial capitalized on a series of kills and Axewomen errors to pull away for a 25-15 win.
The Axewomen responded with a strong start in the third set, jumping out to a 4-0 lead, including a service ace from Bailey. Lake and Lemay-Evans continued to contribute offensively as Acadia maintained a 19-15 advantage. Memorial, however, rallied late, overtaking the Axewomen to secure the set 25-22 and complete the sweep.
Lake led Acadia with 12 kills and a .345 hitting percentage, finishing with 12.5 points. MacLean recorded a .750 hitting percentage with three kills on four attempts and led the team with 19 assists. Lemay-Evans added 13 kills with a .200 hitting percentage and a team-high 14 points. Mia Lemay-Evans led the Axewomen in blocking with three block assists, while Bailey registered two service aces and two block assists, contributing four points.
Courtney Hodder paced Memorial with 18 points, recording 16 kills with a .414 hitting percentage. Karen Greek was dominant in setting, tallying 34 assists while maintaining a perfect hitting percentage of 1.000 with three kills. Lydia Grawer added 13 kills and 14 total points, while Olivia DeDecker chipped in two service aces and six points for the Seahawks.
The Axewomen return to action Friday when they host Moncton at 7 p.m.
