Axewomen place 3rd in Acadia Open Meet

WOLFVILLE, N.S. - Considered a tight technical course, the opening race of the AUS Cross Country season was dominated by the Dalhousie Tigers women's team and the Memorial Sea-Hawks men's team.

This year's opening race was hosted by Acadia at a tight venue at Noggins Farm in Greenwich, N.S. and the times reflected a difficult course.

Compared to last year's opening race in at Point Pleasant Park, times were up to a minute longer but Memorial's Matthew Power and Dalhousie's Coleen Wilson persevered with times of 21:02.31 and 19:39.65 respectively as first place finishers.

In the women's 5km race, Wilson captured first place followed by Moncton's Carol-Ann MacDonald (20:18.28) in second and teammate Kamylle Frenette (20:45.88) in third.

Host Acadia had a highest finish in recent years from first year runner Margaux McLean who posted a sixth place time of 21:02.99. Axewomen Madalyn Higgins (21:29.03), Alicia Henry (21:41.95), MacKenzie Seagram (22:18.97) and Chrissy Smith (22:25.07) finished in the top 20.

The Tigers captured the women's team results with 25 points and Moncton landing second with 62 points. The host Acadia Axewomen fell short in grabbing second with 68 points.

On the men's side, Memorial's Matthew Power grabbed gold with a time of 21:02.31 in the 6km race at Noggins Farm. Power led his team to a first place team finish of 32 points, while the Dalhousie Tigers trailed the Seahawks with 48 points.

Tiger Anguls MacIntosh finished second in the men's race with a time of 21:37.30 and Moncton's Bryan Thomas landed in third with a time of 21:40.50.
