WOLFVILLE – Gordon Shortt (swimming) and Jenna Lake (women’s volleyball) have been named Acadia athletes of the week for the period ending March 10.

Lake, a third-year psychology student, was named the AUS women’s volleyball championship MVP after the Axewomen defeated the Saint Mary’s Huskies to win the program’s first AUS championship. She led the championship season with 4.0 points per set and 85 kills, which included an impressive .535 hitting percentage in the deciding match against the Huskies, which Acadia swept 3-0.  

Shortt, a fourth-year business administration major, competed in four finals over the three-day U SPORTS swimming championship in Montreal. On Thursday, the opening day, he was part of the 4x100m Freestyle team that finished 12th with a time of 3:34.62 in their timed final. The following day in the 200 Medley B final, he finished third with a time of 2:08.19 to be 11th overall nationally. His finish earned him a spot at the Olympic trials. The final night saw Shortt competing in the men’s 50m breaststroke C final. Finishing fifth in his event (21st overall), he had a time of 29.58, which qualified him for the Olympic trials.

The swim team’s season has concluded, while women’s volleyball plays their first U SPORTS match on Friday night against the Brock Badgers. First serve on CBC Sports is scheduled for 9 p.m. Atlantic.
