Rooney and Cox named Acadia athletes of the week
WOLFVILLE – Sophie Rooney (swimming) and Glen Cox (basketball) have been named the Acadia athletes of the week for the period ending November 3.
Rooney, a third-year business major, was part of the Axewomen team that won the women’s team event at Acadia’s Jack Scholz Invitational for the first time in the 15-year history of the meet. She finished first in the 50m, 100m and 200m backstroke events, plus had a second place in the 50m butterfly. Rooney was also part of the first place 200m medley relay team and second place 400m freestyle relay team.
Cox, a fourth-year business administration student, helped the Axemen to an opening week split thanks to his league-leading 23.5 points per game through the two games. On Wednesday night in a 98-95 overtime loss to Saint Mary’s he finished with 32 points and 14 rebounds, which he followed with 15 points and 10 rebounds in a 78-62 victory in Acadia’s home opener on Saturday night. Cox currently sits fourth in the country in scoring, with Manitoba’s Daren Watts leading the nation with 26.0 points per game.
Swimming will now prepare for the Kemp-Fry meet at Dalhousie in late November, their last meet of the first semester, while basketball heads to UPEI this weekend for a pair of games against the Panthers.
The Acadia athletes of the week are presented by McDonald's.
