Axemen fall to Gaiters to end 2023 season

WOLFVILLE – The Acadia Axemen made a second half push but were unable to comeback to top the Bishop's Gaiters in their final contest of 2023 as they fell 22-10.

Bishop's opened the scoring in the game with a safety 5:30 into the game and held their lead from that point on.

They led 16-0 at the half, scoring just six points in the second half.

Acadia scored seven points in the third quarter to close the gap, adding a field goal in the fourth after being shutout in the opening 30 minutes.

Mason McGriskin was 14-for-24 throwing for 191 yards and a touchdown, with his longest pass on the day being 56 yards. Xavier Gervais also had a positive day for Bishop's going 6-for-11 with 101 yards and a long pass of 54 yards.

On the ground the Gaiters' David Chaloux had 98 yards rushing. In the air they were led by 137 yards on seven receptions (19.6 average) by Oliver Burnett, who scored one touchdown.

For Acadia, their offence was led by Dante Tabacu, who threw for 112 yards (9-for-24). He also led the Axemen on the ground with 19 yards.

Thomas Veinot was 1-for-2, making a 46-yard field goal for Acadia, while also kicking an extra point. Gaiter Xavier Gervais was 4-for-4 with an extra point, his longest field goal of the day being 28 yards.

The AUS football season concludes next weekend with Acadia on a bye, while Bishop's hosts Mount Allison. Kick-off in Lennoxville is scheduled for 7 p.m. Atlantic.
