Heart of the Axe: Manny Beals
"Playing any sport at a high level is not a right but a privilege, and it's important to value the little things in life, as they can grow into something beautiful. Acadia brought out the best in me, and the Town of Wolfville played a significant role in that."
Heart of the Axe is a weekly feature from the perspective of Axemen and Axewomen student-athletes. It dives deeper into why they decided to attend Acadia, what drives them athletically, how they got started in their sport, the impact Acadia has had on them during their time in Wolfville and much more.
This week's feature athlete is fifth-year football Axeman and kinesiology major Emmanuel Beals who joined the Axemen in 2019-20. As a graduating member of the team this season, he looks back at how he arrived in Wolfville, his time here and what's next for him.
I’ve been writing my story for years — long before I had any idea where it would take me.
My journey to become the athlete I am today at Acadia University began over a decade ago.
I first stepped onto the field when I was twelve years old, following the passing of my dad.
Initially, I used the sport as a means to cope with the immense sadness and pain of losing him.
But after a couple of years, football transformed into something I genuinely loved and enjoyed.
It became a source of fun and a way to honor my father, who means everything to me.
Joining Acadia
After I graduated high school, I knew I wanted to study in the province where my dad grew up and join a team with a strong culture and great coaching staff.
Acadia checked all those boxes.
I visited the campus in 2018, guided by former Acadia graduate and Ontario teammate Patrick Marsden.
I remember stepping onto the campus and being captivated by the beautiful scenery of the dykes and trails.
Meeting people who were genuinely excited about life in Wolfville was an incredible experience.
The atmosphere was electric, especially with AUS playoff basketball happening, and the support among Acadia's teams was remarkable.
Acadia felt like a home away from home, and I have no regrets about spending five years here.
Each year, I grew more grateful for the friendships and experiences I gained.
This place is special — whenever I step onto Raymond Field, walk the trails, or spend time with friends, I always ask myself, "Where would you rather be?"
A moment I’ll never forget
One of my favorite memories at Acadia was during my first year when we went undefeated and won the AUS championship in 2019.
It was an incredible feeling to contribute to that team through practice, games, and work in the weight room.
The veterans were encouraging and made football fun, pushing me and the other first-year players to believe we could achieve something special in the years to come, whether individually or as a team.
That season was a testament to the dedication and resilience of our team, and it's a memory that will always hold a special place in my heart.
Beyond the field
One of the biggest lessons I've learned from my experience at Acadia is to remember that I am more than just an athlete.
Playing any sport at a high level is not a right but a privilege, and it's important to value the little things in life, as they can grow into something beautiful.
Acadia brought out the best in me, and the Town of Wolfville played a significant role in that.
Walking around town and having kids or adults recognize me from games they've watched inspired me to become a better person, leader, and friend.
Each year, I gained more appreciation for the people behind the scenes at Acadia Athletics and throughout the university, who dedicate their time to ensuring that athletes and students feel safe and at home.
I'd like to thank everyone who made my experience here both enjoyable and secure as I move on to the next chapter in my life.
What’s next
Looking ahead, my goal is to play professional football, either overseas or in North America.
After that, I plan to pursue a master's degree and become a teacher, where I can encourage students to appreciate the importance of life and physical activity.
My journey at Acadia has been an incredible one, filled with valuable lessons, unforgettable memories, and personal growth.
The support of my family, friends, coaches, and teammates has played a significant role in shaping the person I am today.
As I continue to write my story, I carry with me the values and experiences I gained at Acadia, knowing that they will guide me in whatever path I choose to pursue.
I am forever grateful for the opportunities I've had and the people I've met along the way.
Acadia will always hold a special place in my heart, and I am proud to be an Acadia Axeman.
