RECAPS of the first day of the Stu Aberdeen Tournament

GAME 2 - Manitoba Bisons vs Acadia Axemen

WOLFVILLE, N.S. - The Manitoba Bisons beat the Acadia Axemen and improve to 1-0 in their first game at the Stu Aberdeen tournament this weekend.

The Axemen thrived off the lively crowd in the first and grabbed a 25-21 lead in 10 minutes. Acadia's Marcus Upshaw (Burlington, Ont.) dished out 5 assists in that timespan and added 2 points for good measure. His teammate, Rowan Power (Dartmouth, N.S.), made all his field goals, including one three-pointer.

Powers lead the Axemen offensively all game and put up a team-high 16 points and added 7 rebounds. Powers was named Acadia's Subway Player of the Game.

The second quarter played out similarly to the first, with Acadia pulling ahead and passing well. Rashawn Browne of the Manitoba Bisons led all players with 16 points on 6/10 shooting. He would end up with a massive 30 points by the end of the game. It was without question that he was the Subway Player of the Game.

The Bisons outplayed the Axemen in the third quarter and regained the lead. By the end of the quarter, the Bisons were up 72-64.

Things continued to get worse for the Axemen and the Bisons took advantage of the lull in defence.

After their early success from beyond the arch, the Axemen began to force the three-pointer and did not have the same results. After going an impressive 9/15 from 3 in the first half, the Axemen shot 2/13 in the second.

The Bisons closed the game out by a score of 98-72. The Axemen scored a total of 25 in the second half, which is fewer than the Bisons had in the fourth quarter alone, not to mention their 31-point third quarter.

The Bisons play Friday's other victor, the Saint Mary's Huskies, Saturday at 5PM.

Acadia plays their next game against the York Lions Saturday night at 7PM.

GAME 1 - York Lions vs Saint Mary's Huskies

WOLFVILLE, N.S. - The Saint Mary's Huskies defeated the York Lions 88-75 in the first game of the Stu Aberdeen tournament on Friday night.

York started off with a quick 9 points, but could not sustain their hot scoring touch for much longer than the first few minutes. The Huskies bounced back with several blocks and points off turnovers. The Lions led the first quarter 19-14.

By the second quarter, Saint Mary's had fully adjusted to the Lions' style of play and began to go to work on their defence. The Huskies turned their 5-point deficit into an 11-point lead by the end of the half, up 41-30.

The Lions fought for most of the third quarter to get themselves back in the game, but the Huskies kept their foot on the gas. Just as it seemed the Lions were about to tie it, the Huskies would go on a run of their own.

Saint Mary's continued to build on their lead and walked out of the third quarter up 68-51.

York briefly came back to life with a 9-0 run, but the Huskies were able to respond and protect their lead.

The Huskies kept their fast pace up for most of the fourth quarter, giving the Lions no hope for a comeback. The final score favoured SMU 88-75.

The Huskies will look to improve to 2-0 against the Bisons Saturday at 5PM.

York will face off against the Axemen at 7PM Saturday evening.
