Capers sweep Axemen in two close contested games this weekend

WOLFVILLE, N.S. – The Cape Breton Capers swept the weekend 2-game series this past weekend with an 89-83 win at Stu Aberdeen Court in Wolfville.

Osman Omar was a one-man wrecking crew and named the AUS Subway Player of the Game after netting 30 of the Capers' 89 points, paving a path for their second win of the weekend against the Acadia Axemen.

With only a one-point lead after the opening quarter, the Capers hung on to a 43-38 lead at the half.

Both teams exchanged leads throughout the opening half, where the largest Caper lead came at the 1:54 mark of the second quarter when Kujtim Ujkani silenced the crowd with a dunk that gave Cape Breton a seven-point lead.

Another sea-saw half followed the first, with the Capers edging Acadia 24-22 in third-quarter play.

Omar would play his best basketball in the second half with 10 points in the third quarter and 14 in the final frame.

While the Axemen captured a 23-22 final quarter win, it was not enough to top the 67-60 lead.

The Axemen out-scored the Capers from the distant arc with 11 of 17 compared to Cape Breton's 5 of 13, the Capers posted a field goal percentage of 54.4% and added 30 points from the bench.

A game that showed six lead changes and seven tied scores, the end result was another close game between the Capers and Axemen this past weekend.

Acadia's Alex Muise had a team-high 22 points, while teammates Rowan Power and Thomas McDonald had 17 and 13 respectively. Eli Kraushar led the Axemen in rebounding with seven boards.

On the winning side, Omar's 30 points lead all on the court, with teammates Cooper Ward and CJ Bennett adding 10 points. Diangelo Woodside pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.

The Capes improve to 5-6, while the Axemen drop to 1-9.

Acadia will travel to Saint Mary's (5-5) this Friday and then host the Huskies on Sunday (3:00 pm), and the Capers host Memorial (6-4) next Saturday and Sunday.
