Axemen grab first win of the season in a 91-82 win over Capers

WOLFVILLE, NS – In their first win of the season, the Acadia Axemen defeat the Cape Breton Capers 91 – 82. Subway Player of the Game Seth Blundell (Vernon, B.C.) contributed 15 points and 7 rebounds off of the bench on his birthday.

"It was a must-needed win, to be honest. We needed this and we hope to have some momentum when we are back tomorrow," said Blundell. "We said we would come in with grit and energy. We did it and we closed the game out. A couple of bad plays and a couple of bad possessions but we just pushed through it."

For the Capers, Osman Omar (Mississauga, ON) led both teams in scoring with an impressive 37 points.

Neither team had secured a win this season coming into tonight's contest, and the back-and-forth nature of the game showed how much both teams wanted it. There were 13 ties and 5 lead changes in the 40 minutes of action.

Jason Callaghan (Sydney, N.S.) provided the Capers with a lift-off the bench. Callaghan scored 15 of Cape Breton's 17 bench points in the contest. Acadia proved to be the deeper team in this match with 37 bench points. Gabe Davignon (White Lakes, N.S.) and Blundell both scored in double figures off the bench for Acadia.

Shortly into the fourth quarter, the Capers extended their lead to 10 points and it looked as if they might start to pull away, but a steal by Gabe Davignon that led to a three from Seth Blundell gave the Axemen a spark. From that point on, Acadia would outscore Cape Breton 27 – 11.

Demeric Mercer (Halifax, N.S.) left his mark on the game in the fourth quarter. Mercer scored or assisted on 16 of the Axemen's 30 fourth-quarter points. The sophomore guard tallied 15 points to go along with 10 rebounds and 6 assists in the game.

The 1 – 4 Axemen will rematch against the 0 – 5 Capers tomorrow, November 12^th at 4:00 pm.
