Capers squeeze past Axemen for first win of the season

WOLFVILLE, N.S. – Subway Player of the Game Osman Omar (Mississauga, Ont.) scored 42 points as he led the Cape Breton Capers to a 98–97 victory over the Acadia Axemen.

Gabe Davignon (White Lakes, N.S.) led Acadia in scoring, adding 22 points off the bench and was named Acadia's Player of the Game.

A tightly contested thriller, the Cape Breton Capers mounted a come-from-behind win on a Saturday evening that came down to the final seconds.

With 56 seconds left in the contest, Alex Muise (Bedford, N.S.) dished it to Gabe Davignon for a three that would give the Axemen a 5-point lead. The bucket was quickly answered by Osman Omar who drove to the basket for a layup.

A missed free-throw by Acadia shortly after led to a transition opportunity that ended with Jason Callaghan (Sydney, N.S.) making a three to tie the game.

On the next play of the game, the Axemen would commit an over-the-back foul in an attempt to crash the offensive glass.

The Capers held the lead for only 1 minute and 12 seconds of playing time, unfortunately for the Axemen, this would include the final 12 seconds.

The made free-throw from Tyson Cato (Ajax, Ont.) would secure the Capers their first victory of the season as the Axemen were unable to find a bucket as the clock expired.

Alex Muise (Bedford, N.S.) added 18 points to Davignon's 22, while Thomas McDonald (Rothesay, N.B.) posted 13 points and five rebounds.

Jason Callaghan netted 20 points for the win while teammate Tyson Cato recorded 15 points.

The Axemen fall to 1 – 5 as they split the two-game series with the now 1 – 5 Cape Breton Capers.

The Axemen will play in Halifax against the Dalhousie Tigers on Friday, November 18th at 8:00 pm. The Capers will return home to host the Saint Mary's Huskies at the same time and date.
