CIS No. 5 Axemen edged in OT by No. 2 Huskies

(Halifax, NS) In a game that went to overtime, Huskie Stephen Johnston (Guelph, ON) scored the winning goal at 3:46 of an extra period to give the CIS No. 2 ranked Saint Mary's a 2-1 overtime win over the No. 5 Acadia Axemen Friday night at the Halifax Forum.

Johnston's goal was assisted by Matt Tipoff (Toronto, ON) and Cameron Wind (Barrie, ON). Johnston's clutch marker earned him Subway player of the game honors.

In a tight first period, there was no score at the end of 20 minutes of play; however, in the second, first year forward Remy Giftopoulos (Ancaster, ON) opened the scoring at 10:19 on the power play for Acadia to give them a 1-0 lead.

Huskie Francis Menard (Embrun, ON) answered back for at 15:00 to tie the game at 1-1 after 40 minutes to end the second period.  The score remained tied at one a piece at the end of the third forcing the game in OT. Saint Mary's assists went to Steven Beyers (Orangeville, ON) and Ben Duffy (Lower Sackville, NS).  Acadia assists went to Travis Gibbons (London, ON) and Zachary Franko (Winnipeg, MB).

Acadia outshot the Huskies 26-22, including a third period 9-3 shots in favour of the Axemen.  The Huskies had one shot in the overtime frame, which ended up being the game winner.

In the net for the Huskies, Anthony Peters (Blyth, ON) made 25 saves for the win and Brandon Glover (Victoria, BC) stopped 20 shots in goal for Acadia. Glover leads the AUS with a 2.14 goals against average.

This was each team's last game before the Holiday break. The Huskies don't play again until January 3rd, when they travel to Antigonish to meet the X-Men.  The Axemen return from the break on the 3rd at 7 pm as well against the Dalhousie Tigers at the Forum.
