Axemen remain 2nd in standings with win vs Moncton

MONCTON, N.B. - The CIS No. 2 ranked Acadia Axemen continue to hold onto a four point lead over the third place Saint Mary's Huskies in the AUS standings after dropping the Moncton Aigles Bleus 1-0 in Moncton after a postponed game on Saturday due to inclement weather.

While Acadia only out-shot the Aigles Bleus 12-11 in the opening period, both teams had several scoring opportunities. Second year goaltender Brandon Glover was sharp on all 27 shots, recording only his second shutout and 17th win of the regular season.

Third year forward and AUS leading goal scorer Brett Thompson netted his 17th goal of the season at the 13 minute mark of the second period. The 1-0 lead would hold on for the eventual win for the Axemen.

Moncton was out-shot 38-27 and only eight penalties were called in the rare Sunday afternoon game. Brandon Thibeau was outstanding at times, holding the Axemen to one goal. Tibeau holds a 3.96 goals per game average while Glover is fourth in the AUS with a 2.30 goals per game average and a 0.911 save percentage.

The Axemen have two games remaining in the regular season, both scheduled for this coming weekend at home. Hoping to improve on a 19-4-3 record, Acadia will host Dalhousie on Friday and wrap up the regular season against StFX.

Moncton sits sixth amongst the six post season qualifiers with a 10-14-2 record and will end the regular season in Fredericton facing UNB on Friday followed by Saturday's game versus St. Thomas.
