CIS No. 6 Axemen top No. 3 Huskies in 5-2 win

HALIFAX, N.S. - In AUS men's hockey action Friday night, the CIS No. 6 Acadia Axemen defeated the No. 3 Saint Mary's Huskies 5-2 at the Halifax Forum.

The Axemen wasted no time opening the scoring as Subway player of the game Boston Leier (Saskatoon, SK) tallied from the circle through a screen at

27 seconds to make it 1-0. Saint Mary's responded when Stephen MacAulay </sports/mice/2015-16/bios/macaulay_stephen_1df4> (Cole Harbour, NS) scored a shorthanded goal in the slot at 13:43 to tie things up at 1-1.

Acadia got the lead back when Leier scored his second of the game on a one-timer from the top of the circle on the powerplay at 14:27 to make the score 2-1 after the first period. In the second period, the Huskies got one back when Mitchell Maynard (Cole Harbour, NS) potted a marker from the top of the circle at 7:57 to tie the game again at 2-2 after 40 minutes.

In the third, the Axemen took the lead back when Brett Thompson (Sault Ste. Marie, ON) scored in the slot at 2:22 to make it 3-2. Acadia increased their lead when Michael Clarke (Halifax, NS) tallied from the circle on the powerplay at 8:22 to make the score 4-2.

Acadia sealed the win when Thompson potted his second of the night into an empty net at 18:28.

The Axemen outshot the Huskies 31-19. Brandon Glover (Victoria, BC) made

17 saves to get the win for the Axemen. Cole Cheveldave </sports/mice/2015-16/bios/cheveldave_cole_r9ah> (Calgary, AB) stopped 26 shots in net for the Huskies.

Both teams are back in action next Saturday at 7:00 pm. The Axemen visit the UNB Varsity Reds and the Huskies are on the road as well against the UPEI Panthers.
