The Acadia Axemen secured a 2-1 victory over the StFX X-Men in Game 1 of their AUS quarterfinal best-of-three series Thursday.
Peyton Hoyt scored the game-winning goal early in the third period, while Tyler Deline found the back of the net on the power play in the second. Goaltender Thomas Couture turned aside 28 shots to backstop Acadia to the win.
After a scoreless opening period that featured multiple penalties and strong goaltending from Couture and StFX's Patrick Leaver, Acadia broke through in the second frame. Deline capitalized on a power play at 11:31, with Ethan Ernst and Cam MacDonald drawing assists.
Hoyt doubled Acadia's lead just 1:10 into the third, with Liam Kidney and Bailey Peach setting up the goal. StFX responded at 15:13 when Charlie Callaghan fired home a shot assisted by Raegan Wiles and Ryan Struthers, but despite pulling their goaltender in the final minutes, the X-Men were unable to find the equalizer.
Callaghan led StFX with seven shots, while Ethan Burroughs added five. Jacob Maillet won 10 of 23 faceoffs for the X-Men, and Leaver finished with 27 saves in the loss. Cole Nagy was dominant in the faceoff circle for Acadia, winning 15 draws.
Game 2 of the series is Saturday in Wolfville at 7 p.m.
