FREDERICTON - The Acadia Axemen will look to keep their season alive on Monday after falling 7-1 to the UNB Reds in Game 2 of their AUS semifinal series Friday night. UNB now leads the best-of-five series 2-0.
Liam Kidney provided Acadia's only goal, scoring at 10:40 of the first period off assists from Brady Burns and Peyton Hoyt. Cole Nagy led the team with 10 faceoff wins, while goaltender Thomas Couture made 35 saves under relentless pressure from UNB's offence.
The Reds struck early with a shorthanded goal from Macauley Carson at 2:55, followed by another at 7:53. Kidney's goal cut the deficit to one, but UNB's Peter Reynolds quickly restored the two-goal lead at 11:46.
Acadia had a power-play opportunity early in the second period but couldn't capitalize. UNB extended its lead when Cody Morgan scored on the man advantage at 15:42, making it 4-1 heading into the final frame.
Despite Acadia's efforts, UNB controlled the third period, adding three more goals—two from Carson, who finished the night with four, and another from Reynolds.
The Axemen now return to Wolfville for Game 3, a must-win matchup, set for Monday at 7 p.m.
