Sea-Hakws grab win on penalty kick in 83rd min.

St. John's N.L. - The Sea-Hawks earned a 2-1 win over the visiting Acadia Axemen on Sunday in AUS men's soccer action. Rookie midfielder Jordi Slaney scored both goals for Memorial, including the game-winner on a penalty kick in the 83rd minute.

Acadia opened the scoring early as Andrew Snyder scored in the fourth minute to put the visitors up 1-0.

Slaney evened the score with a strike from outside the box that got past Acadia keeper Eric McGarry.

The Sea-Hawks were playing a man down for much of the second half after defender Adam Drover picked up his second yellow card of the game in the 60th minute.

The Sea-Hawks were forced to drop back and defend after Drover's ejection but an Acadia foul in the penalty area gave them the opportunity to win. Slaney made no mistake on the penalty kick as he scored his third goal of the season.

Slaney was the player of the game for Memorial while Erik Merchant was the player of the game for Acadia. Both players were players of the game for the second consecutive game.

Sea-Hawks keeper Michael Bartellas had four saves in the win including a pair of late saves that thwarted the Axemen rally.

The win was Memorial's first of the season. Their record is now 1-5-1. Acadia fell to 4-3-1 with the loss.

The Sea-Hawks will travel to Charlottetown next weekend for a pair of games against the UPEI Panthers. UPEI are 0-3-3 on the season. The Axemen face Saint Mary's next Sunday afternoon. The Huskies are f5-2-1 and sit in first place in the AUS men's soccer standings.
