Soccer Axemen open season with convincing 3-1 win

WOLFVILLE, N.S. - The Acadia Axemen soccer team opened up the regular season on a positive note with a convincing 3-1 win over the Mount Allison Mounties. The last time both teams met was September 23 of last season when the Axemen were dropped 3-0.

With pressure applied by the Axemen in the opening 20 minutes, AUS All-Star Zach Shaffelburg knocked in the only goal of the first half after the Axemen landed 11 shots, forcing Mountie Janas Hammar to make six saves. Shaffelburg posted a game high six shots while Subway Player of the Game and teammate Cochrane Noseworthy Smith added four.

The Mounties tightened the game in the second half but Cochrane Noseworthy Smith pushed the lead to 2-0 at the 54 minute mark.  Mount Allison's Bradley Joseph answered Smith's goal about two minutes later to close the margin to 2-1.

First year Forward John Attenborough added the win protector with less than six minutes remaining in the game to give Acadia an insurmountable 3-1 lead in the closing minutes.

Acadia's Eric Ross picked up the win with one save on six shots, while Hammar made eight saves on 17 shots. Acadia picked up five corner kick opportunities.

The Axemen take on the Cape Breton Capers at 3:15pm on Sunday to wrap up a two game opening weekend at home
