Soccer Axemen slip to sixth place at 4-4-3

WOLFVILLE, N.S. - The Acadia Axemen fell 2-0 to StFX in closing action this past Homecoming weekend. Randy Ribiero for Saint F.X. and Lucas Chamberlain for Acadia were today's Subway Player of the Games.

Acadia started out strong in the first half of action and landed many in-close opportunities but  X-Men. keeper, Steven Rodenhizer, was solid in not allowing the Axemen on the board. At the 20 minute mark Mark Harpur recorded his first goal of the season for the X-men and Acadia found themselves down 1-0 as the halftime whistle sounded.

Acadia applied lots of pressure in the second half but still were unable to score despite many close opportunities. Late in the game, Subway Player of the Game Randy Ribiero chipped a shot into the net while the Axemen were pressing for a goal in the final minutes. Acadia keeper Eric McGarry, who was out of the net assisting in the pressing in the final minute, was caught out of his net and was able to race back to defend while Ribiero raced to a loose ball to knock in the insurance goal.

Sitting in sixth place with a 4-4-3, Acadia next travels to Dalhousie on Friday while StFX heads home to take on Cape Breton Friday as well. The Axemen wrap up the regular season at home next Saturday evening against UPEI starting at 6pm.
