Sea-Hawks win first but Axemen drop third

WOLFVILLE N.S. – The AUS second place Acadia Axemen faced the winless Memorial Sea-Hawks. It was the Seahawks that came out on top, notching their first win of the season in a 1-0 decision. The Axemen drop to 3-3-0 due to a three game losing streak that began last Sunday against the first place UNB V-Reds, but remain in second place in the AUS standings – one point ahead of Dalhousie.

An evenly matched game, both teams traded opportunities for much of the first until Sea-Hawks rookie Ryan Thistle sent a rocket on net.

Axemen keeper and Subway Player of the Game for the Acadia, Andrew MacRae, made the initial save but could not recover as Thistle sent the rebound into the back of the net and put Memorial up 1-0.

Acadia started the second half a step slow but picked it up the pace that includes several good opportunities. With 25 minutes remaining to play, the Axemen made another push when Memorial keeper Andrew Anson went down making a save on the Acadia attack. Anson would have to leave the game.

Memorial did not have a backup keeper available and so fourth year midfielder Taylor Smith took to the net for the Sea-Hawks.

Cochrane Noseworthy-Smith weaved through the Seahawks defenders and nearly tied the game with ten minutes remaining, but the final score would be 1-0 in favour of the visiting Sea-Hawks.

First year midfielder Jacob Westcott was the Subway Player of the Game for Memorial.

The Axemen will travel to PEI to face the Panthers on Saturday while Memorial returns home to play Moncton next Saturday.
