Capers keep streak alive with 4-0 over Soccer Axemen

WOLFVILLE N.S. - The Acadia Axemen(5-4-2) took on the AUS second place Cape Breton Capers (7-2-1) on Sunday afternoon at Raymond field. Graduating Axemen players were honoured before the commencement of the final home game of the season but Acadia would not end Cape Breton's seven game winning streak, falling 4-0 to the Capers.

Cape Breton dominated from early in the game. On a free kick from 30 yards away, Capers midfielder and Subway Player of the Game, Mark Stewart, opted to pass to fellow midfielder Andrej Rajic who sent a shot over the wall of defenders and into the back of the Axemen net, putting Cape Breton up 1-0.

With eight minutes remaining in the half, and another free kick, this time from 35 yards away Stewart placed the ball to the foot of third year mid-fielder Kwabe Boateng who redirected it passed diving Acadia keeper Andrew McCrae. Cape Breton held a 2-0 lead going into halftime.

The Capers were not finished and in the second half they poured on the pressure. With Axemen keeper, Andrew MacCrae on his knees after making two prior saves, Cape Breton forward Ian McGreedy shot the ball over MacCrae's head and increased the lead to 3-0.

With nine minutes remaining in the game, third year midfielder Kwabe Boateng took a free kick just outside the 18-yard box that soared into the upper right corner of the Axemen goal, giving the Capers the 4-0.

Acadia's third-year defender Mike Wilkinson was the Subway Player of the Game.

The Axemen are travelling to visit Mount Alison on Friday night to wrap up their season. A win will put the Axemen into the post season, while Cape Breton heads home to play StFX Wednesday night.
