Axemen hand CIS No. 5 ranked Capers 2md loss

WOLFVILLE, N.S. – Two goals in the second half lifted the Acadia Axemen soccer team past the CIS No. 5 ranked Cape Breton Capers.

The AUS first place Capers were handed only their second defeat of the season as the Axemen prevailed 2-0 and improve to 7-1-2.

After a scoreless first half that marred by rain and wind, the Axemen scored three minutes into the second half when Travis Fenning headed a ball in the box to give Acadia a 1-0 lead. The goal was Fenning's sixth of the season.

Fifth year defender Andrew Snyder scored his second goal of the season after Jordan Fabri kept a corner kick in the box and Snyder capitalized on the free ball.

The Capers pressured late in the game against a stiff wind but couldn't break the goose egg. Senior keeper Nigel Goodwin recorded the win and improved to 2-0-2 with only one shot on net from the Capers.

Acadia landed six shots on Caper keeper Ben Jackson. Jackson's winning record drops to 3-2-0.

Senior striker Matt Berrigan was thrilled with the play of his teammates and the win against the Capers.

"Coach told us to just keep our composer against them (Cape Breton). We are a great team from our back line to our attackers to our midfielders, as long as we kept our composer and intensity and energy high we were bound to win" commented Berrigan after the game.

Cape Breton holds onto first place with an 8-2-1 record, while the Axemen trail the Capers by two points with a 7-1-2 record and a game in hand.

Cape Breton will host StFX this coming Saturday afternoon and the Axemen take on Memorial in two games starting on Friday night in St. John's.
