Capers remain undefeated with 4-0 win over Axemen

WOLFVILLE, N.S. - The Acadia Axemen lost their last game of the season 4-0 against the Cape Breton Capers on Friday night.

The Capers surprised the Axemen with a goal around the 15-minute mark when a long distance throw-in was headed in by Stuart Heath (Belfast, Ireland) for his first goal of the season.

The shots in the first half reflected the score; 1-0.

The 47th minute saw a Cape Breton penalty shot, though Acadia goaltender Nic Jeffries (Rothesay, N.B.) made an excellent save to keep the game at 1-0.

The game quickly got out of hand for the Axemen when Caper Cory Bent (Preston, U.K.) scored two fantastic goals within 3 minutes of each other.

A fourth was added later by Peter Schaale (Bernkastel, Germany), who's ground-level shot snuck by Jeffries. Schaale's goal put the game out of reach for the Axemen and earned him his team's Subway Player of the Game award.

The Axemen put up a good fight against a tough team, but it was the Capers who would take this one 4-0. Axemen Ryan Parris (Permbroke, Bermuda) fought hard throughout the match and was named Acadia's Subway Player of the Game.

Both teams finished high enough in the standings to continue their season in the playoffs. The Capers clinched first place several weeks ago while the loss drops the Axemen to fifth place.

The Capers will receive a first-round bye while the Axemen will face fourth-place StFX X-Men in Quarterfinal play next weekend in Sydney, N.S., host site of the Men's and Women's Soccer championships.
