Huskies deliver loss to Axemen on Homecoming Weekend

WOLFVILLE, N.S. - The Saint Mary's Huskies held onto a 2-0 lead to beat the Axemen on Friday evening.

The Axemen appeared to have a 1-0 lead at the 19-minute mark, but the goal was called offside.

After 30 minutes, the game had its first goal - a cross out front that was perfectly deflected in by Saint Mary's Cian Tousignant-OSiadhail (Timberlea, N.S.) to give the Huskies a 1-0 advantage.

The Huskies tapped in another goal off a nice cross pass, this time by Kwaku Korankye (Halifax, N.S.) to make the score 2-0. Korankye's goal locked the game up for the Huskies and earned him a Subway Player of the Game award.

Acadia had several good chances to start the second quarter as the Huskies began to sit back a little, but they were unable to find the back of the net.

The Axemen kept going at it, but between their bad luck and the stellar play of Huskies goalie Jensen Brown (Enfield, N.S.), they couldn't put one up on the board.

Gordon McLaughlin (Peterborough, Ont.) peppered the Huskies with shots, and although none of them went in, his hard work earned him Acadia's Player of the Game award.

The final score read 2-0 for SMU.

The Axemen drop to 2-7-1 and hit the road on Saturday and will play against the Moncton Aigles Bleus in the afternoon at 3:00 p.m.

The Huskies will look to improve their record 5-5-0 record at home against UPEI on Saturday evening.
