Six qualify for CIS championship after Dal Meet

HALIFAX, N.S. - The Acadia swim team finished in second place amongst AUS competition this past weekend at the AUS Invitational Swim meet hosted by Dalhousie.

It was an historic meet for both women's and men's teams in the CIS era. For the first time, the Acadia swim team will be able to field both relay teams for both men and women. After one male and one female qualifier last season, the team already has three women and three men for this year's CIS Championship meet hosted by the University of Victoria.

For the women they include Rebecca MacPherson who qualified in the 100m and 200m backstroke, along with the 100m and 200m freestyle. Rebecca swam to a new Nova Scotia record in the 200 freestyle. First year swimmer Laura Beck qualified this past weekend in the 50m and 100m backstroke and senior swimmer Elizabeth Skuriat qualified in the 400m freestyle

On the men's side, perenial breaststroke champion, Luc Boudreau, made the standard in all three breaststroke distances including the 50m, 100m and 200m breaststroke. Joinging Boudreau this season will be Justin LeBlanc who qualified in the 50m breaststroke and third year swimmer Hayden Adams who made the cut in the 200m backstroke.

Both teams rewrote many of the Acadia team's records including rookie swimmer Rebecca MacPherson who set new Acadia records in the 50m, 100m and 200m freestyles as well as the 100m and 200m backstrokes. She also teamed up with Laura Beck, Alison MacEachern and Kassandra Parsons to set records in both the 400m medley and 400m freestyle relays. Laura Beck set a new record in the 50m backstroke while teammate Elizabeth Skuriat in the 400m freestyle and Alison MacEachern in the 100m and 200m butterfly set new marks.

Hayden Adams set new Acadia records in the 50m, 100m and 200m backstroke and the 100m freestyle. The men's medley relay team of Hayden Adams, Luc Boudreau, Patrick Henger and Thomas Frazer also set a new mark.

Both squads were the second place AUS teams by  a large margin over the rest. The women are at their highest ranking in the history of AUS swimming. The men have equaled their second place ranking from several years ago.

The team will take a break from competition but not practicing as they prepare for the last of AUS competition on January 17 and 18 at UPEI before the February 6-8 AUS Championship hosted by Dalhousie.
