Swimming team performs well in MtA mini-meet

SACKVILLE, N.S. - The Mount Allison Mounties hosted their first AUS swim meet in 15 years on Saturday as they welcomed teams from Dalhousie, the University of New Brunswick and Acadia University.

The defending conference champions from Dalhousie University once again were top overall performers for both the men's and women's categories.

Dalhousie had top finishes in 12 of the women's races on the day.

For Acadia, Cali Bruce posted the day's fastest time for the women's 50M breaststroke.

On the men's side, Dalhousie swimmers finished first in 10 events on the day while Acadia finished first in 4 events, including the men's 200M freestyle relay.

Brett Liam picked up two wins for Acadia, finishing 1st in both the 50M breaststroke and the 50M butterfly events

"The team came into the meet very tired and sore from weeks of hard work. Expectations were not overly high in terms of performance as it was the last chance to fine tune their competitive skills and to race the competition. Despite their tiredness they managed to show true grit in many areas," noted Acadia head coach Gary MacDonald.

One of the highlights of the competition was the Axemen came away with two relay victories in the 4x 50m Free relay and 4 x 50m medley relay. Only the second time in team history that the men's team has beaten the Dalhousie swim team.

"The team is anxious to head into the next two weeks as they make their final preparation and begin their taper and rest as they look forward to swimming some very fast times at the Kemp / Fry Invitational. It should be a very competitive meet with McGill University coming down with 30 plus strong swimmers," concluded MacDonald.

AUS swimming returns to action with the Kemp Fry Invitational at Dalhousie University from November 16th-18th.
