WOLFVILLE, N.S. – The Acadia swim team pulled off their second combined result win this year today and also won the men's results at the Acadia Invitational swim meet.
The second session included only Dalhousie and Acadia, with Mount Allison and UNB leaving early because of the ensuing snowstorm in New Brunswick.
The Dalhousie Tigers captured the women's results title, while Acadia finished second to the Tigers.
The Tigers posted 11 of 18 event wins, compared to the host Axewomen and Axemen who pulled in seven wins including the men's relay win.
Lise Cinq-Mars led all women in the pool with two wins in the 50m backstroke and 100m butterfly. Rookie Gordon Shortt led all men's swimmers with two wins in the 400m freestyle and 50m breaststroke.
Shortt was a member of the 200m freestyle relay team that won gold. Shortt was joined by Brett Liem, Dean Sangster, and Reilly Baker.
The Tigers won the women's 200m freestyle relay with Cinq-Mars, Isabel Sarty, Martin Nyhof, and Reagan Crowell.
In the final combined standings, Acadia recorded 1446.5 points compared to second place Dalhousie who had 1261.5.
The women Tigers squad posted a 770.5 to 595.5 point win over the host Axewomen, while the Axemen celebrated their third AUS regular-season win with a convincing 851 point victory over Dalhousie who had 491 points.
"This past weekend was a final tune-up for AUS. Both the men's and women's team came into the meet very tired and were just looking for some solid racing. Top performances were not the goal, just good honest effort and hoping to show that they are in the hunt in AUS swimming," said Acadia head coach Gary MacDonald.
The team vibe is very high and we will have high expectations going into the championships. One more week of hard training and then the big rest and peak hoping for some special performances at Dal – host of the AUS championships," added MacDonald.
While the men's team continued their winning way, the Axewomen finished a solid second place and will be the difference heading into the AUS championships in February.
"The women also showed some true grit and they are gradually closing in on their rival. Although the women are not in the hunt for a championship, they will be vying for a spot with several athletes who are very close to U SPORT qualifications," said MacDonald.
