Basketball Axewomen pickup 2OT win over UQAM in exhibition play

WOLFVILLE, N.S. - Acadia's Kristy Moore netted 35 points to help squeeze the Axewomen basketball team past a fiesty Univesite de Quebec a Montreal (UQAM) in a 79-78 double overtime game that kicked off Acadia's exhibition season.

Moore, who had five three pointers in four quarters of play along with one overtime period, was named the Subway Player of the game.

Leading the Citadins 27-19 after one half, the Axewomen were pressed and faced a tougher defense in the second half as UQAM tightened the lead to 40-37 in favour of the hometown Axewomen after three quarters.

As the game wound down, the Citadins trailed by three with less than five seconds remaining in the game when Marie-Claude Lavertu sank a shot from the distant arc with 2.7 seconds remaining in regulation time to force the game into overtime.

Pushing out to a lead early into the first of two overtime periods, Acadia allowed Valerie Gauvin to sink a three point shot in the dying seconds of the extra frame to tie the game at 72.

Newcomer Emily MacLeod added a three point shot after Kristy Moore's layup in the second overtime period along with UQAM's Valerie Gauvin's three point shot and Camille Michaud's layup creating a deadlock at 77, but Acadia would prevail. Abbey Duinker's two points in the closing minute ended up being the game winner as the Axewomen topped UQAM 79-78 in a nail-biter.

The Axewomen host Guelph tomorrow night at 7pm and face UQAM again Sunday morning at 11am at Horton High School to cap a 3 game opening exhibition weekend.
