UNB hands Axewomen second loss in a row

WOLFVILLE, N.S. - The Acadia Axewoman were hoping to get back into the win columin after a splitting last weekend's two game matchup against Dalhousie, drop to 1-4 with a loss the visiting UNB Varsity Reds.  The Varsity Reds were led by Subway player of the game Awo Farrah who had 10 points, six rebounds and one assist while only recording a single turnover.

At the start of the game, Acadia's shots were not falling, but strong defense kept them in the game finishing the quarter up 13-10. Fifth year veteran Abbey Duinker put the team on her back in the second, scoring nine of her 13 points including a buzzer beating three to end the half 30-26 in favour of the Axewomen.

UNB began the second half after a very tight opening minutes, with a 10-3 run that included a balanced scoring attack. The Axewomen clung to a 42-40 lead entering the final frame of play, but Acadia was two for fourteen from the field in the fourth and shot a dismal 24.6% from the field on the game. UNB capitalized, scoring 17 points in the fourth and handing the Axewomen their fourth loss of the season and second in a row with the final score 57-49.

Duinker, who had a team high of 13 points was Acadia's Subway Player of the Game. First year forward Tamara Dondi netteind 8 points including one three pointer, while Aprille Deus, Maya Macatumpag and Katie Ross each had six points in the losing effort. The Axewomen will hope to snap their two game losing streak with a win against UNB tomorrow night at 6pm in their second matchup of the weekend.
