Axewomen grab 62-56 win over UNB to split weekend series

WOLFVILLE, N.S. - After losing to UNB Friday night, the Axewomen split the weekend match-up and defeated the Varsity Reds 62-56 in Saturday basketball action.

Acadia was shooting hot early let by Maya Macatumpag with 10 first quarter points, shooting 4-4 on an assortment of drives and pull up jumpers. Macatumpag finished with 18 points. The Axewomen played strong defense and limited UNB to eleven points in the frame taking an 18-11 advantage into the second.

UNB pushed back to within two but seven second quarter points by fourth year forward Rachel Savage saw the Axewomen with a four point lead entering half time, 29-25.

The Varsity Reds did not back down in the second half and the Axewomen were unable to break away. UNB was led by second year forward Katelynn Mangold with 13 points. Mangold was 5-5 from the charity strip and earned the Subway Player of the Game honor for her team.

In the final frame, Emily Macleod, Acadia's player of the game, scored 7 of her 18 game points for the Axewomen to clinch the win, 62-56. Macleod also collected 10 boards, three on the offensive glass and made some strong drives that sent her to the line where she went 8-10.

The Axewomen improve to 2-4 while UNB drops to 3-3. Acadia takes on the 1-4 StFX X-Women at home next Thursday, while UNB hosts the CIS No. 1 ranked and undefeated Saint Mary's Huskies next Saturday in their final game this semester.
