Sea-Hawks hand Axewomen first loss of 2014

WOLFVILLE, N.S. - Acadia looked to start the regular season off strong in 2014 in a four point match up against the 2-4 Memorial Seahawks but fell short in a 65-50 loss on Minor Basketball Night.

In a low scoring first quarter, both teams got off to a slow start with an end of the first quarter score of 12-7. The intensity picked up in the second but it was visiting Sea-Hawks who took a 30-24 lead into halftime.

Rachel Savage scored six third quarter points but Memorial pulled ahead in the third, lead by their Subway Player of the Game, Kelia Pond who netted 16 points on 47% shooting from the field. The Seahawks held a 41-32 advantage entering the final frame.

Acadia had a bit of energy in their step midway through the fourth but Memorial held tight on a lead that stretched up to a 15 point Axewomen deficit that was too much to overcome.

Starter Sydney Ezekiel and reserve Chante Clarke had big games for Memorial contributing 14 and 13 points respectively.

Fifth year forward Abbey Duinker led the Axewomen in the loss, scoring 14 points and bringing down 12 boards, earning her Acadia's Player of the Game honours.

Acadia will look to bounce back tomorrow at 11am as they finish off their weekend matchup against Memorial. The Sea-Hawks will then host UNB a week from tonight while Acadia hosts UPEI next Friday and Saturday night for the annual CIS Shoot for the Cure event.
