Axewomen split weekend with 65-60 win over MUN

WOLFVILLE, N.S. - Behind 18 points and 10 rebounds from Subway Player of the Game Abbey Duinker, the Acadia Axewomen took control late in the game and emerged victorious in the second of two back-to-back 4-point games against the Memorial Seahawks. With the win Acadia is 1-1 in the New Year and moved ahead of UNB in the AUS standings while Memorial falls to 3-5. 

The Axewomen started the game off strong with an 11-2 run, but the Sea-Hawks scored a quick six and finished the quarter strong to tie the score at 16.

The game went back and forth for most of the second but Memorial scored the final seven points in the second frame and went into halftime intermission with a 31-25 lead. 

Opening the final quarter with a 43-42 advantage over the Sea-Hawks, the Axewomen fought hard to retain several leads including a four point margin with two minutes remaining in the game.  Two free throws by Abbey Duinker and a layup by rookie Emily MacLeod would capture the win.

Acadia had a strong third quarter, scoring 18 points and holding Memorial to just 11. Duinker sealed the game for Acadia with 7 points in the final quarter. Acadia played strong and drove hard hitting key free throws. The Axewomen out-rebounded the opposing Seahawks and shot 35% from the floor but turnovers kept Memorial in the game until the very end.

 

Axewoman Emily Macleod had four of her eight points in the final frame including the final layup. Aprille Deus played strong in a starting role, adding nine points.

Memorial's Sandra Amoah, named the Memorial Subway Player of the Game, had 14 points and seven rebounds in the loss , while teammate Megan Robinson added 13 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals. 

Memorial will head home to face UNB next weekend and Acadia will host UPEI  for the annual CIS Shoot for the Cure weekend  - Friday and Saturday night.
