Turnovers plague Axewomen in loss to Capers

Turnovers plague Axewomen in loss to Capers

WOLFVILLE, N.S. - In a hard fought AUS women's basketball game, the Acadia Axewomen could not overcome 32 points off of 32 turnovers and fell 68-50 to the Cape Breton Capers (6-5).

Acadia struggled to break an early press by Cape Breton who jumped out to a quick 8-2 run in the first two minutes of play. But the Axewomen answered back with seven points of their own by looking to get into the paint, with the first quarter ending in a 16-13 Caper lead.

Acadia continued to find success while driving to the hoop as seven of their nine, second quarter points came from the charity stripe.  It was Subway Player of the Game Katie Ross who helped spark the Axewomen.

Ross had eight points and five rebounds for Acadia and provided points and a lift from the bench. Both teams played strong defense in the second with the score at 24-22 in favour of Capers before the break.

In the third quarter it was Cape Breton's pressure that once again troubled the Axewomen and pushed the Capers lead to 14. Acadia was outscored 28-16 in the third frame and were unable to generate needed offense because they were plagued by turnovers. Heading into the final quarter, Cape Breton head onto a 52-38 lead.

Through the fourth it was more from the Capers as they stretched the lead to 18 and finished strong. Subway Player of the Game Alison Keough netted 13 points and pulled down nine rebounds for the win. Colleen Keane added 18 and Tanira McClurkin contributed 13 to the cause.

Fifth year veteran Abbey Duinker and third year guard Maya Macatumpag both also had strong games for the Axewomen. Working hard to drive to the hoop and score inside on a smaller Cape Breton squad, both had 12 points, while Duinker also contributed 12 boards for a double-double in the loss.

The Axewomen drop to 4-8 and will play a rescheduled match against the division leading and CIS No. 2 ranked Saint Mary's Huskies before travelling to New Brunswick to play a pair of games against UNB. Cape Breton heads to Halifax tomorrow to take on Dalhousie and then hosts Memorial for two games February first and second.
