Axewomen remain undefeated with win over X

WOLFVILLE, N.S. – In front of a near capacity crowd at Acadia's War Memorial Gymnasium, the U SPORTS No. 1 ranked Acadia Axewomen improved to 10-0 with a convincing 89-42 win over the StFX X-Women.

As one of only two teams in the nation who are still undefeated in regular season play, the Axewomen played inspired after Wednesday's slow start against the X-Women in Antigonish.

Chanel Smith led the Axewomen in scoring with a game-high 22 points, while Paloma Anderson and Haley McDonald added 15 points each.

Out to a 29-8 lead after the opening quarter, the Axewomen kept the pedal to the metal with a 24-10 second quarter and 53-18 halftime lead.

Outplayed again, 19-5 in the third frame, the X-Women put together a better performance by posting a 19-17 final quarter score. Kendra Smith had a team-high 11 points off the bench.

StFX gave up 33 turnovers and the top team in the country capitalized on them with 32 points from the steals.

Acadia was 34% from the three-point line, but also worked on their inside game with 24 points in the paint.

"We came out today and played a 'team game' today. Going in to the half we had 10 field goals and 8 off assists, so I think the key was to keep the pace high and keep the ball moving and that is we found our groove and I think that is where all of our luck came from today," noted Chanel Smith following the game when asked about the trouble her team had in the first half of Wednesday in Antigonish against the X-Women.

"When we are not playing well, that's when we are not moving and not really staying connected and today we knew the key to success was to be connected, get good drives and follow off each other's drives," added Smith.

StFX drops to 0-10 and will head to Saint Mary's this coming Wednesday for a 4-point game, while the Axewomen host UNB (6-5) and UPEI (4-6) this Friday and Saturday respectively – each game worth 4-points in the standings.
