HALIFAX, N.S. – The Acadia Axewomen (3rd) have defeated the Dalhousie Tigers (6th) 74-54 in Friday afternoon's second women's quarterfinal of the Subway AUS Basketball Championships.

The Axewomen were led by AUS Second Team All-Star Jayda Veinot's 19 points (on 7-15 shooting) and seven rebounds.

Dalhousie was able to contain Acadia's AUS First Team All-Star, Haley McDonald, in the first quarter, limiting her to just 2-9 shooting in the first ten minutes.

However, buoyed by a solid team effort, Acadia still managed to gain a 16-11 lead in the first quarter and never looked back.

McDonald was able to find her shot in the second quarter, finishing the first half with 11 points, and helping the Axewomen push their lead to 14 at the half.

The Tigers fought hard but were never able to find a consistent rhythm as Acadia took a 16-point lead into the fourth quarter (51-36), and pushed that to as much as 27 midway through the fourth.

Thanks to her strong play throughout the entire game, Acadia's Jayda Venoit (the AUS rookie of the year) was named Subway Player of the Game.

"We are use to 4 or 6 o'clock games and we were nervous, but Len told us even without that, we will be able to shoot like we can shoot and we've been shooting for a long time, so come in confidently and they will fall," said Veinot after being asked about the difficulty in shooting in a larger venue like Scotiabank Centre.

Former Tiger Shalyn Field add 11 points for the win and Tracy MacLeod Award nominee Lanae Adams added an outstandign 10 rebounds.

The Axewomen will move on to play the UPEI Panthers in tomorrow's second women's semifinal at 3 p.m. at the Scotiabank Centre.
