Axewomen pick up first exhibition win of 2019-20 season

WOLFVILLE, N.S. – The defending AUS champion Axewomen basketball team picked up their first win of a young exhibition season with a dominating 77-46 win over the visiting MacEwan Griffins.

The Griffins faced an insurmountable first quarter 20-9 deficit that only continued to grow to 41-14 at the half.

Jayda Veinot led all at the half with 11 points, while teammate Haley McDonald nine points.

The Griffins cut into the Acadia lead in the third quarter by posting a 25-17 disadvantage and closed the gap to 66-31 after three frames.

Veinot would post a game high 24 points in 28 minutes of play for the Axewomen as they closed out the game with a 77-46 win.

MacEwan's Mackenzie Farmer led the Griffins with 12 points and teammate Shannon Majeau netted nine points.

The Griffins out-rebounded the Axewomen 43-35, but turned over the ball 31 times compared to Acadia's 12. The Axewomen capitalized on the turnovers adding 30 points from the Griffins giving up the ball.

The Axewomen were 31.4% from the distant arc by draining 11 of 35 attempts and were nearly perfect from the charity strip with 10 of 12 counting.

The Axewomen head to Montreal next weekend to take on McGill, Concordia and UQAM. The Griffins face Kings College tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. at Stu Aberdeen Court.
