WOLFVILLE, N.S. – The visiting StFX women's basketball team likely couldn't wait to get off the court in tonight's last home game of 2021-22 season on Stu Aberdeen court as the host Axewomen handed the X-Women a 91-50 loss.
The Axewomen improve to 10-4 with the win and sit second in the AUS standings, while the X-Women fall to 2-13 – their 7th loss in a row and sit six points ahead of Dalhousie in last place.
Senior guard Jayda Veinot posted a blistering 16 points in the first quarter of play as the Axewomen pushed out to a 25-10 lead after 1 frame.
Acadia continued the barrage of points in the second quarter with Veinot adding 10 more points and ending the first half with 26 points.
The X-Women continued to struggle in the second half resulting in a dismal 17.4% from the field while being out-rebounded 58-33 after regulation time.
The Axewomen posted their largest lead of 42 points at the 8:33 mark of the last quarter.
Tyra Atherley was the bright spot for the X-Women with 14 points, while teammate Courtney Taylor led StFX with 7 rebounds in 12 minutes of play.
For the fourth time during this shortened season, Veinot posted 30 points or more and currently leads the AUS with 23.1 points per game average and total points of 323 in 14 games.
Veinot moves into second place in the Axewomen's points per game record book.
Other notable Acadia performances include 14 points off the bench from Sarah Delorey. Elizabeth Beals-Iseyemi added 13 points and a head-turning 15 rebounds. Rookie Samantha Russell recorded 11 points and six rebounds.
Both teams posted a high number of turnovers – 15 for X-Women and 18 for the Axewomen.
StFX and Acadia conclude the AUS regular season in a rematch in Antigonish on Saturday – game time 6:00 pm.
On a side note, two Axewomen were honoured this evening on Seniors Night. Jayda Veinot and Meghan MacLeod, who were teammates at Horton High School, will see Stu Aberdeen Court for the last time in their University careers. Best of luck Axewomen in your future endeavours.
