Helmig steals victory for Axewomen

WOLFVILLE – With 8.1 seconds on the clock and the Cape Breton Capers up by a point, Acadia's Bianca Helmig (Speyer, Germany) stole the inbound pass from CBU's Hannah Smith (Bedford, NS) and finished her layup to give the Axewomen a 61-60 victory on Saturday night.

Helmig finished the night with six points, while Samantha Russell (Dartmouth, NS) led the way for the Axewomen with a game-high 19 points and 12 rebounds for Acadia's lone double-double of the game.

Starters Elizabeth Iseyemi (Dartmouth, NS) and Lisa Bolander (Uppsala, Sweden) finished with 15 and 10 points respectively.

The Capers were led by Kiyara Letlow's (Toronto, ON) 19 points and 14 rebounds. Chermensa van la Parra (Rotterdam, Netherlands) had a solid weekend to follow her Friday night performance as she finished with 18 points on Saturday.

As a team, the Axemen outshot Cape Breton from the floor, going 32.9 per cent from the field compared to 29.3 per cent. Acadia was also better at the free throw line, shooting 68.5 per cent.

The Axewomen are now 4-2, while the Capers are 3-3 heading into next weekend. Acadia will host Memorial for a pair of games in Wolfville. Cape Breton is home for one game as they welcome the UNB Reds.
