Fowler set to bring size and skill to Axewomen basketball
WOLFVILLE, N.S. — The Acadia Axewomen continue to build for the future with the addition of 6’3 forward Sophie Fowler, one of Atlantic Canada’s top young basketball prospects.
A native of St. John’s, N.L., Fowler has been a standout at Holy Heart of Mary High School, helping lead her team to four tournament titles over her time at Holy Heart, capped off by a 20-2 record heading into the provincial championship in her senior season. She has also been a key contributor to Team Newfoundland, gaining valuable experience against top national competition.
Her development has been shaped by high-level training, including an invitation to the 2023 Canada Basketball U16 Training Camp, time with GUAA Canada Elite U16, and participation in an NCAA training camp in Memphis. This spring, she will compete at the ESPN Classic Tournament with Court College.
Axewomen head coach Len Harvey believes Fowler will make an immediate impact at the university level.
“She’s been well coached and supported in her development, becoming one of the top Atlantic Canadian recruits with a very broad skillset that we feel is going to translate well into the AUS,” Harvey said. “She’s certainly a player we feel can impact our roster right away with the level of skill she has, her desire to compete and improve, as well as her size and athleticism. We were really impressed with Sophie's attitude and approach during her recruitment process, and think she's going to be a great fit here in Wolfville with the team.”
Fowler said she was drawn to Acadia’s community and competitive team culture.
“I chose Acadia to pursue my academics and athletics because of the tight-knit community, the team culture, and the drive to get better—things that were very important to me,” she said. “I am so excited and grateful for this opportunity at Acadia University.”
She will study biology while competing for the Axewomen.
