Soccer Axewomen open up season with a win

WOLFVILLE, N.S. - In the AUS season opener against the visiting Mount Allison Mounties, the Axewomen soccer team started strong, scoring a goal in the opening minute of play. 

An early corner kick from Jenna Blackburn into the feet of teammate Kinsella Noseworthy-Smith was followed by a flick on to the head of Rebeccah Slaunwhite, who found the back of the net giving the Axewomen an early 1-0 lead.  

The Axewomen continued to apply pressure on Mounties and at the 34 minute mark, first year striker Katie Ross gave the host team a little more breathing room off a well hit ball from 30 yards out that caught the top of the net. 

Heading into the second half the score remained 2-0. The Axewomen continued to press and kept the ball in the Mounties end for the majority of the half resulting in a few good scoring opportunities to push the lead out. The game ended with a 2-0 win for the Axewomen and the player of the game was goal scorer Rebeccah Slaunwhite. 
After the game Subway Player of the Game Rebecca Slaunwhite reflected on her feelings towards the game. " It felt good to break the ice early in the game in finding the back of the net. This is just a small preview to a new season and what we're capable of and it is just the beginning".

Head coach Amit Batra was very pleased with the effort of the girls and their work all week on the game plan for tonights game. "I felt we were well prepared, more than we ever have been before. I think that is part of the maturity of the the group who were able to excute it much better", points out Batra. "The win was a great starting point. We are going to have to look at getting better every day and this game gives us the right mindset to do that".

Acadia's hussle to the ball paid off with 17 shots attempted and nine of which were on target compared to the Mounties' six with only half landing on target.

The Axewomen return to the field Sunday September 8th vs the Cape Breton Capers starting at 1pm.
