Axewomen grab first win of Homecoming weekend

WOLFVILLE, N.S. - The Axewomen soccer team improved to 5-1-2 with a convincing 4-1 win over the Mount Allison Mounties in the first home game of Homecoming weekend on the Acadia campus.

Acadia's four goals came from only two players.

Subway Player of the Game, Kinsella Noseworthy Smith (Wolfville, N.S.) scored the opening goal of the game unassited and her fifth of the regular season only 10 minutes into the opening half. Noseworthy Smith recorded a game high three shots and two shots on goal.

Fourth year midfielder Michelle Pryde (Calgary, Alta.) scored the eventual game winner 20 minutes into the first half. Pryde would score her second goal of the game with 13 minutes remaining in the opening half to give Acadia a 3-0 lead.

Claire Neufeld (Newmarket, Ont.) scored the Mounties' only goal that came unassisted in the final seven minutes of the first half. Mount Allison's Subway Player of the Game was Emily van Diepen (Morell, P.E.I.).

Noseworthy Smith would score her second goal of the game and sixth of the season with under a minute remaining in the game to give Acadia a 4-1 win against the Mounties.

It was good to get back to playing (after the Thanksgiving weekend break)" pointed out head coach Amit Batra. "It was a strange game and we need to rebuild our momentum that we had going into the break. A good result in time to move on to the next match."

The Mounties, who drop to 2-4-3, head home to host the UPEI Panthers, while the Axewomen will head to Halifax on Sunday to take on the 2-6-1 Saint Mary's Huskies.
