WOLFVILLE, N.S. - The Acadia Axewomen scored the only goal in Sunday afternoon's 1-0 game against the Memorial Sea-Hawks. The Axewomen have 4 shutouts in as many games played.
Two defensively strong teams spent all game trying to get shots through to the net, with only 8 shots needing action by a goalkeeper. The Axewomen outshot the Sea-Hawks 6-2.
The game's single goal was scored by Axewomen midfielder Alexandra Scovil (Hubley, N.S.) and did not come until the 67th minute. It was Scovil's fourth goal of the season. Rookie Jayden Boudreau (Halifax, N.S.) picked up the assist on the play that would lock the game up for the Axewomen.
The Axewomen played the rest of the game out strategically, making smart passes and killing time when possible. Acadia posted give shots on net.
Acadia goalie Sarah Charnock (Newmarket, Ont.) played a perfect game to pick up the shutout. It was Charnock's second start of the season. She was tested on two shots on goal.
Midfielder Julea Walsh (Hammonds Plains, N.S.) was involved in a number of key plays, both offensive and defensive, and was named the Subway Player of the Game.
"We've started well this season but the game vs Memorial is the norm in the AUS and no surprise to us they came here and battled. It was physical and they defended well. I was happy with how we played but the MUN and Acadia match is always a good game," commented Axewomen head coach Amit Batra after the game.
The Axewomen will travel to the University of New Brunswick on Saturday, then Mount Allison on Sunday.
"Next weekend we head on the road to UNB who are going to look to reset their season and our battles have always been tough as well. Going on the road to Fredericton is never easy and while their program has had some tough opening matches, pretty much every game has been close so we would be wrong to underestimate them. As for MTA, I think they showed yesterday they are improving quickly so we'll have to bring our best game on both days," said Batra when asked about what to expect this coming weekend in New Brunswick.
The Sea-Hawks are back in action on Saturday when they take on the team from Saint Mary's.
